Snow hotel opens in Norway |
|
The
world’s northernmost snow hotel is set to open its doors in Norway
today (Dec 15th 2006) – offering guests a really ice place to stay.
Finishing touches have just been made to the fantastic snow structure located 1200m from Kirkenes high up in Norwegian Lapland.
Set in beautiful Arctic surroundings, guests can enjoy one of 12 double
snow suites in the hotel situated in the grounds of the popular Gabba
Reindeer Park. The suites will each have a double bed and snow
sculptures will adorn the hotel adding to its magical atmosphere.
An overnight stay costs 1750 NOKS, approximately £145 per person per
night. This includes dinner, breakfast the following morning, a sauna
and hot drink.
This is the second snow hotel in Norway, the first having been built in
Alta, also in Norwegian Lapland. The hotels are built from scratch each
winter after melting away the previous spring.
Sinikka Routaslainen from the Finnmark Tourist Board in Norwegian
Lapland, says: “We are very excited to have another snow hotel here in
Norwegian Lapland.
“These hotels offer visitors an incredible experience and a night they
will never forget. While temperatures in the hotels are kept at a
constant temperature a few degrees minus, guests will be kept toasty in
a thermal sleeping bag.
“For those who don’t feel brave enough to stay overnight, the hotels
are open for visitors to take a look around and they can indulge in a
quick drink at the ice bar to complete their experience.”
As well as the two snow hotels, Norwegian Lapland offers a wealth
of activities including reindeer racing, dog sledging, snowmobiling and
king crab fishing, (unique to this area).
