Although
the hotel building dates back to the early 19th century, its
association with the Brenners did not begin until 1872 when Anton
Brenner bought the property for his daughter and son-in-law. The
spacious hotel was, at that time, named the Hotel Stephanie, and was
ideally suited as a retreat for the aristocracy.
Following extensive refurbishment and extension in the early 20th
century, the hotel was able to boast more than 200 rooms. Such
was the appeal of Baden Baden as a spa resort, it drew a great many
important visitors. Among the guests who once stayed at the hotel
were Prince Otto von Bismarck, Grand Prince Michael of Russia and
Edward, Prince of Wales (later Edward VII).
In 1914, the hotel had to close, not simply because Germany was
at war, but because most of the male staff had been called up to
fight. The hotel reopened in 1920, to experience a wonderful
revival during the "Golden Twenties". When the casino in Baden
Baden reopened in 1933, Brenner Park saw a boom in international
visitors.
War once again forced closure in 1939, and although
parts of the complex re-opened by 1950, much of the building was deemed
beyond repair. It was decided only to retain the building
constructed in 1900.
Today
the hotel is still considered to be Baden Baden's jewel in the crown,
and offers guests the epitome of luxury, complemented nicely by the
beautiful surroundings of Baden Baden itself.
