The Oriental, Bangkok, Thailand

The Authors Wing

An oasis of calm in a delightfully chaotic city, The Oriental hotel offers its guests an all-enveloping luxury escape.

The Oriental has long been a favourite with the rich and famous, counting beautiful stars of the silver screen (Grace Kelly and Elizabeth Taylor) and famous authors (Joseph Conrad and Wilbur Smith) among its past guests.

Dating back to the ornate extravagance of 19th century colonialism, the hotel was originally a lodge for European traders.  Burned to the ground in 1865, the classic Authors' Wing was rebuilt in 1876, and over time, two further wings, the Garden and River wings, were added.

Rooms and facilities

private butler serviceRenowned for its extravagance, The Oriental offers a total of 393 rooms and suites split between the three wings, with each and every one of them having its own private butler service.

Want to be surrounded by teak furniture and elegant Thai silks?  Then choose one of the sumptuous superior River Wing rooms, where fresh fruit is delivered daily.  Wrap yourself in a fluffy bathrobe and listen to soft music from your very own private CD library.

The lighter, more neutral decor of the newly renovated Deluxe River Wing rooms is enhanced by large, floor-to-ceiling windows.  These come with a balcony, where you can relax while glimsing views of the Chao Phya River.

Slightly smaller, the superior and deluxe Garden Wing rooms retain touches of the old colonial grandeur.  Also newly refurbished, some rooms feature two levels, with luxurious bedroom above and plush seating areas below, where a combination of marble, parquet flooring, artwork and antique chandeliers add to the ambience.

The thirty five suites have been enjoyed by kings, queens, heads of state, film stars and some of the world's greatest authors.
