Four Seasons Tented Camp, Thailand

Romantic setting of the Four Seasons tented campA fairy-tale setting surrounded by verdant jungle and mountain scenery is the location for Four Seasons' luxury tented camp.  Situated in the "Golden Triangle", where Thailand, Laos and Burma converge, the Chiang Rai province was once best known for its links with the opium trade.  Today though, the neat terraced fields are more likely to produce tea, coffee and fruit, while the hill tribes specialise in crafting jewellery, silverware and textiles.

Here at the camp, the answer to the old question "is it better to travel or arrive" is definitely "both", as the journey is all part of the experience.  Guests are driven from Chiang Rai International to West Post, where they board a traditional long-tail boat for a 20-minute ride along the Ruak River to East Post.   After refreshments, guests stroll along jungle pathways to their tents.

Luxurious tented accommodationThe fifteen free-standing tents afford total privacy, and each has its own large outdoor deck overlooking the river and mountains. Featuring one king or two twin beds, the decor is styled to resemble 19th century adventure exhibitions, while furnishings are hand crafted and custom-made, right town to the hand-hammered copper baths. Amenities are completely 21st century, with exclusive toiletries, in-tent safe, air-con, private refrigerated bar, spa services, robes and slippers.

Dining at the camp is all part of the experience, with locations varying from day to day. Breakfast is always served at the main Nong Yao restaurant, where tables are decorated with hill-tribe artefacts. Lunch might be a jungle picnic, while dinner could be a barbecue, a campfire affair or a formal five-course meal.

The open-air thatched Nong Yao restaurant specialises in cuisine from Thailand, Laos and Burma, but also serves Western-style dishes. White linen tablecloths are complemented by local stoneware and silver cutlery, offset by the rustic illumination of hurricane lamps.  Enjoy a drink in the Burma Bar, while browsing through the collection of maps and books, or sit at the desk and try your hand at writing with a quill and ink!
